What color are we?

Kids are so funny! For the past 4 years of their lives it's like the color of someone's skin was not even noticed much less and issue. Well, today, at age 4 years and 4 months it finally came up. The racial issue. Or maybe not so much racial...just simply the color of one's skin.
Jack is full of deep questions. They usually revolve around how big God is or if God can lift certain things (God is a superhero you know!). "My God is soooo BIG" as the Veggie Tales say.
Anyway, we call Jack our little Theologian...just like his daddy!

Tonight though, the question was of a different origin.

He said, "Mommy, you and me and Bryn and West all look the same, right?"

I said, "Well, Yes Jack. We're all in the same famly", not getting where he was going.

He then said, "Well, Elijah doesn't look like us". Elijah is is his little friend who goes to BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) with him.

I said, "Well, no Jack. He isn't in our family."

And Jack said, "He's not the same color as us."

Knowing who he was referring to, I said curiously, "What color is Elijah?".

Jack bluntly stated, "He's black".

I said, "What color are you?"

Brynlee confidently said, "We're Grey." Ha! Grey!

Then Jack looked down at his arm, looked back up at me and said with a very stumped look on his face, "I don't know what THAT color is".

Wouldn't the world be a different place if we saw people like a 4 year old does. Oh to be a kid again!

This story reminds me of another friend who is adopting a little girl from Haiti. Her nephew has seen photos of Gracie and keeps asking his aunt when she is going to bring home that "brown baby." It's not that he thinks her skin color is better or worse than ours but that's what he remembers about her. Needless to say, my friend is trying to persuade him to call her "Grace" instead!
